- Help & FAQs | Accessible Braille Signs by Made by Boto®
Find answers to common questions about Boto® braille and tactile signage, compliance standards, installation, custom orders, and accessible design support. How do I install signage Made by Boto®? Please review below requirements for compliance/best practice: • Braille and tactile components of a sign should be installed not less than 1200mm and not higher than 1600mm above the floor or ground surface. • Signs with single lines of characters should have the line of tactile characters no less than 1250mm and not higher than 1350mm above the ground surface. • Preferably, signs identifying rooms or facilities are installed on the wall latch side of the door with the leading edge of the sign located between 50mm and 300mm from the architrave. If this is not possible, the Signage may be placed on the door itself, centered horizontally and keeping within guidelines for height (as above). Our signage has an adhesive backing so pretty much anyone can install it. What is Luminance Contrast and why does it matter? Luminance contrast is the light reflected from one surface or component, compared to the light reflected from another surface or component. Any signage should have a luminance contrast with the surface on which it is mounted of no less than 30%. This helps people with vision impairment locate the signage more easily. In order to check if a 30% contrast between a painted wall and your signage is achieved, look up the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of the paint and compare it with the provided values. The difference must be at least 30%, otherwise the contrast is too minimal to comply with the National Construction Code (NCC) of Australia/NZ. Review the suitability of a surface paint before specifying plus consider lighting for each location and choose higher contrast values for poorly lit spaces. Our Made by Boto® base collection has the following Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) in Percent (%): What does DDA-compliant mean? DDA-compliant signage meets the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Australia), ensuring equal access and usability for people with disability. In practice, this is guided by the National Construction Code (NCC, formerly the Building Code of Australia) and Australian Standards (AS 1428.1), which set out specific rules for tactile and Braille elements, colour contrast, font style, size, and placement. These standards make sure signage is functional, legible, and accessible to all. All Made by Boto® products are designed to be fully DDA-compliant while maintaining architectural quality and design integrity. How do I distinguish a LH versus RH transfer? LH (Left Hand) and RH (Right Hand) refer to the side a person transfers from their wheelchair to the toilet, a requirement for accessible toilets under the National Construction Code (NCC) and AS1428 standards. A LH transfer means the grab rails are on the left and the person transfers to the toilet from their left side, while an RH transfer means the grab rails are on the right and the person transfers from their right. This signage helps wheelchair users identify the correct layout for safe and effective use of the accessible toilet facility. LH (Left Hand) Transfer Definition: A person transfers from their wheelchair onto the toilet seat from their left side. Signage: The grab rail is located on the left side of the toilet when facing it. Code Requirement: The NCC requires this signage to be included on accessible toilet facilities to inform users of the transfer side. RH (Right Hand) Transfer Definition: A person transfers from their wheelchair onto the toilet seat from their right side. Signage: The grab rail is located on the right side of the toilet when facing it. Code Requirement: As with LH transfer, RH signage is mandatory for accessible toilets under the NCC. Why it's Important Safety: Knowing the transfer side helps wheelchair users position themselves correctly and safely. Accessibility: Proper transfer signage is a key component of accessible design, ensuring that facilities meet the needs of people with disabilities. Compliance: The NCC mandates these signs as part of the broader requirements for accessible facilities, ensuring buildings are compliant with Australian Standards like AS1428. Is signage Made by Boto® compliant with Australian standards? Yes. Every Made by Boto® sign is designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), the National Construction Code (formerly the BCA), and Australian Standards AS 1428.1: Design for Access and Mobility. This ensures all signage is accessible, durable, and legally compliant, while still maintaining the design quality expected in architectural spaces. At the same time, Made by Boto® advocates for a more inclusive approach to signage—going beyond minimum compliance. Where relevant, we provide best practice options alongside compliant options, helping clients choose solutions that truly welcome and support all users. Can you help you with compliance signage for a new project? Absolutely. Made by Boto® works closely with architects, designers, and project managers to ensure all signage meets the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), the National Construction Code (formerly the BCA), and Australian Standards AS 1428.1. We can review your project needs, recommend compliant solutions, and also present best practice options that go beyond the minimum—helping you create spaces that are not only legally compliant but also genuinely inclusive and welcoming. Are your signs tested for durability? Yes. Made by Boto® signage is manufactured using high-quality materials and finishes designed for long-term performance in public and commercial environments. Our signs are tested for durability, UV stability, and cleaning resistance to ensure they remain legible, tactile, and compliant over time. We build for everyday use in real spaces—so your signage continues to look good and function as intended for years to come. Who owns the designs created by Made by Boto®? All tactile signage designs, artwork, shapes, layouts, and concepts developed by Made by Boto® are the intellectual property of Boto Pty Ltd (trading as Made by Boto®). This includes custom commissions unless otherwise contractually agreed. Are Made by Boto® designs protected by copyright? Yes. No. Reproduction, adaptation, or unauthorised modification of Made by Boto® designs is not permitted without express written consent. We take copyright and design integrity seriously. If you suspect unauthorised use of Made by Boto® work, email us at hello@madebyboto.com with details or images if possible. Can we commission you for a custom design and retain ownership? Ownership of custom work can be discussed on a project basis. In most cases, Made by Boto® retains copyright to protect the design system, while providing exclusive use licenses to clients. This ensures continuity, compliance, and integrity across your built environment. Do you license your work? Yes. We offer licensing arrangements for our collections, systems, and tactile signage elements for use in large-scale or ongoing developments. Get in touch if you'd like to explore a licensing partnership. What makes your designs unique or proprietary? Our work combines technical compliance, architectural detailing, and inclusive design thinking. The unique integration of tactile materials, colour strategies, braille formats, and shape systems (including our Capsule, Arch, and Speech Bubble designs) forms part of our proprietary visual and spatial language. How do you enforce your intellectual property rights? We monitor the use of our designs and enforce our rights under Australian IP law. Where needed, we take legal steps to protect our creative assets and the integrity of inclusive design in the built environment. What are Human Rights and why are they important? Human rights recognise the inherent value of each person, regardless of background, where we live, what we look like, what we think or what we believe. They are based on principles of dignity, equality and mutual respect, which are shared across cultures, religions and philosophies. They are about being treated fairly, treating others fairly and having the ability to make genuine choices in our daily lives. Respect for human rights is the cornerstone of strong communities in which everyone can make a contribution and feel included. Signage made by Boto ensures that spaces are accessible for all people. For more info, visit www.humanrights.gov.au How can I make my commercial spaces more inclusive and accessible? Spaces really profit from updated signage to ensure all people feel welcome. For people with different abilities, it helps to know where the accessible entry is and what facilities are available to them. This is not only to comply to building codes, but simply put, it's good for business. People with neurodivers requirements may want to visit at certain times when sound and noise is minimal. This can be announced by the use of inclusive signage. Restaurants may want to look at braille translations for their menu to allow vision impaired people the dignity to browse the menu. These little things matter and are this world a better place for all. How does Boto® support accessibility? We design signage that meets WCAG and AS 1428.1 standards to ensure environments are accessible for people with visual, cognitive, and mobility impairments. Why is inclusive signage important? Inclusive signage supports equal access for all people, regardless of identity or ability. It enhances independence and safety in public and commercial spaces. Do you consider neurodivergent needs? Yes, our design principles support clarity, consistency, and low cognitive load—important for users with autism, ADHD, or dyslexia. Does Boto® support DEI initiatives? Absolutely. Our mission is rooted in universal design and accessibility, aligned with diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices. Why Acrylic? Because Touch Matters. At Made by Boto®, we design for real people, in real spaces. That means thinking not just about how signage looks—but how it feels. We use high-quality acrylic because it offers something uniquely human: warmth. Unlike colder materials like metal or glass, acrylic has a natural softness and warmth to the touch. It invites interaction without hesitation, making it ideal for tactile signage—especially in environments where people rely on their sense of touch for orientation and navigation. Acrylic is also exceptionally practical. It’s lightweight, durable, and easy to clean—perfect for high-traffic public spaces. It holds colour beautifully, resists wear, and delivers a precise, consistent feel across every raised character and braille dot. And importantly, acrylic is a recyclable material. Our signage is designed with long-term sustainability in mind. When the time comes to decommission or replace signs, the acrylic can be returned to the material cycle—supporting a more circular, conscious approach to design. In short, acrylic allows us to deliver signage that is inclusive, aesthetically refined, and environmentally responsible. It’s a material that reflects our core belief: that good design should work for everyone—and everything—it touches. Who specifies your signage? Our signage is trusted by architects, builders, facility managers, and government agencies for public buildings, workplaces, and End of Trip facilities. Do you offer custom signage? Yes, we specialise in fully custom signage that meets compliance standards while reflecting your brand or interior design requirements. Where do you ship?
